SLICCs give you the fantastic opportunity to tailor your own academic course, tied to the experience you wish to undertake. Here are some of the benefits students tell us they get from completing a SLICC. What are the benefits of completing a SLICC? What past SLICC students say... SLICCs are an opportunity to take learning into your own hands and direct it in your own way, tailoring the output of your experience in an area that you are passionate about. ‘I think it helped motivate me to take the initiative in following and researching my personal interests, and then expanding on that so I can produce something of my own.’ You will be able to gain 20 academic credits for the experience and learning you undertake, which will be displayed on your transcript/HEAR, alongside your other course grades. The 20 credits gained from completing a SLICC can be substituted for any other non-core credit at SCQF Level 8 where your degree programme allows this. For more information on how the credit can be used, please see the section on academic credit. Academic credit gained through a SLICC ‘I was able to reference my SLICC in a recent application for a scholarship in the same subject. This wouldn't have sounded as validated if I had done the project alone.’ This self-directed learning is good practice for future honours projects and dissertations. ‘It was a good way to reflect on definitions and systems that are key to understanding complex processes being taught in my third year.’ Additionally, undertaking a SLICC offers a fantastic opportunity to plan a project from start to finish, engage with learning outcomes and tailor your responses within an established academic framework. ‘A fantastic way to get the most out of a summer project and develop essential skills.’ The process enables you to focus your learning on developing yourself and the skills you may not necessarily obtain in the classroom alone. Using the course’s reflective framework, you will have a chance to practice reflective thinking and writing, essential skills in things like CV writing and job interviews. ‘I would not have kept a diary if it hadn't been for my SLICC. Thanks to my diary I was able to identify the challenges I faced throughout my internship that I had actually already forgotten about by the end.’ Read and hear from students about their experiences doing a SLICC This article was published on 2024-08-05
